2014 for me has honestly been, the best year of my life.
I was lucky enough to have a 6 month sabbatical from work, and have just got back from travelling around South East Asia and Europe.
Time really does fly when you’re having fun. It’s hard to believe I have been to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Italy, Budapest, Prague Berlin and Amsterdam all in the last few months! But I did, honest. I even have photos to prove it!
I have seen sights that I will never forget and have done things I am so proud of and never dreamt I would do!
My main accomplishment is my change of heart with the sea. I went from being too terrified to even snorkel – to qualifying as an advanced open water PADI certified Scuba Diver! I have been to 30m and I love it.
The whole experience was just life changing.
I had the pleasure of seeing lions, tigers, bears, sharks, snakes, scorpions, monkeys and elephants. In Vietnam I visited the war museums and Cu Chi Tunnels where I fired a real life AK 47. I pretended to be Lara Croft at the temples of Angkor in Cambodia – where Tomb Raider was filmed! I’ve seen the most amazing temples and have climbed 1,237 stairs to reach a giant golden Buddah. I endured regular 15+ hour bus journeys, the most testing being 26 hours on a local bus (Hanoi, Vietnam to Vang Vieng, Laos). I rode a motorbike through what can only be described as Jurassic park (Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam) and I also rode a motorbike 100 miles across a mountain in North Thailand to get to Pai, a remote mountain town. I was in Chiang Mai for the Crazy Songkran Water Festival and I was also lucky enough to do a 3 day live aboard and dive in the Andaman Sea and visit the flawless Similian Islands. It really is hard to try and put all of this into one blog entry!
As well as the obvious perks of travelling; the white sand beaches, crystal blue seas and skies and the delicious food… I can honestly say I have learnt some valuable life skills whilst I was away. As well as being a professional sunbather, I can proudly say I only need as many clothes and cosmetics that will fit in a 60L backpack. I didn’t think it was possible.
On a serious note – I learnt a lot about myself and what I want from my future. I have come back a lot better at budgeting. My time management has improved. Having built friendships with people from all over the world, I consider my networking skills to have improved. I have learnt that behind every person lie many interesting stories. I have also come back humbled and determined to work hard and be successful.
I am so grateful and lucky Bright gave me the chance to experience this amazing journey. Sat back in my office and back at my desk I can honestly say – I am so glad to be here. I am so determined to work hard… which is lucky because since I have been back we have been busier than ever!
